A good time to try something new..

Why should you try something new when you already know what you like? Well one reason is that there hasn't ever been a better time to drink wine. There are more good wines, more great values, more 'new' winemaking regions whose wines are available than ever before. With the ease at which we can now source wines from places like Greece, Bulgaria, Okanagan Valley or Lebanon not to mention the remarkable jump in quality from places like Spain, Puglia, Sicily, Loire Valley, Paso Robles, etc. now is the perfect time to expand your horizons by reaching out and trying something new. We drink and taste an awful lot of wine but when we're home we try to open something different just about ever night. And yes, there are times when the wine jsut isn't to our liking--but there are plenty of other times when we're surprised to find something delicious and different that we haven't tasted. To us, this is the joy of wine--the surprises, the excitement and the simple pleasure of the refreshment an unknown white from northern Spain can give on a hot summer night or the perfect pairing a red from Friuli (made from a grape we had never heard of) was with a wild mushroom dish. And then to bring it into the store and get our customers excited about it too. Okay, okay, I can hear people saying; "Well, I know I like big reds so I stick with cab because I know what I like". Great. But you may not have had a good Syrah or a big Carmenere from Chile or a Barbera from Piedmont. Or other wines that may have similar weight and texture to cabs. For you to find out you liked cab you had to have tried it for the first time--sometime. I would also ask if you eat the same food every day too? And especially if you have any desire to learn more about wine, the place to start is tasting as many different wines as possible. It's a big, big wine world out there and there's lots of good wines to try. Better get started.
